Downstairs Rooms
First Floor of the Harkey House welcomes you with timeless grace into the comfortable, spacious
and tranquil living rooms and dining room. Formal yet never imposing, the distinctive hallway leads
into a sunny, peaceful courtyard, through a sedate yet exquisite parlor and intimate living room, and
upstairs to private, cozy guest rooms.
Parlor
The Parlor, closest to the Harkey House entrance, suggests contemplation and solitude. A sense of history
and calm pervades the parlor, playing over the books and the lush scarlet wall papering. Trimmed with snug
furniture and efficient, handsome fixtures, the parlor lends itself to introspection.
An amazing Italian game table adds especially to the room's captivating look and feel. This elegant table
has the ability to change into a chessboard or a board for backgammon and other games.
Living Room
The Living Room harbors a memorable collection of ornaments and furnishings placed to enhance serenity.
Many curious and exotic brick-a-brack heighten the room's luxurious air, at the same time enhancing
restfulness. Tasteful, sensitive arrangements foster a pleasant and elegant atmosphere.
Of particular note, in this room rests an unusual well-traveled Chickering rosewood antique piano. The
stately instrument has traveled around the Cape and represents the countless lovely components of the
parlor. This room also exemplifies the Victorian architecture evident throughout the house, which is
particularly apparent in the bookshelves and entrance to the dining room.
Dining Room
Dining Room Guests at the Harkey House will enjoy breakfast in the beautiful French country dining room.
This is set on a lower level than the rest of the house, which makes it larger and gives a sense of
detachment from the immediately surrounding rooms. The black and white tiled floor, soothing fountain,
antique country French hutch, gas fireplace, elegant chandelier, and artfully placed prints on the walls
create a sense of the Provinces.
Breakfast by candlelight is an intimate and tasty affair, with exquisite vases, centerpieces, and a
delicious meal prepared by the host and hostess. The Harkey House is even more a haven from the outside
world in this light and airy room, filled with beauty, wonderful food and good company.
